How to Choose the Right Weighted Blanket Weight (A Simple Guide)

The most common weighted blanket mistake is choosing the wrong weight. Here is a simple guide to getting it right the first time.

The most common question I get about weighted blankets is: how heavy should it be? And the most common mistake people make is going too heavy because they think heavier means better.

It does not. Here is how to get it right.

The 10% Rule

The standard starting point is to choose a blanket that is approximately 10% of your body weight. This is not a hard rule, but it is a reliable guideline that works for most adults.

So if you weigh 140 pounds, start with a 14-pound blanket. If you weigh 160 pounds, a 15 or 16 pound blanket is a reasonable starting point.

Most weighted blankets for adults come in 12, 15, 17, and 20 pound options. This means you will likely be choosing between two options that bracket your ideal weight.

When to Go Lighter

Go lighter than the 10% guideline if you are new to weighted blankets and not sure how you will respond to the pressure. It is easier to wish you had gone heavier than to feel trapped under a blanket that is too much.

Also go lighter if you tend to sleep hot. Heavier blankets trap more heat. If you are already dealing with night sweats or temperature regulation issues, a lighter blanket with a cooling cover is a better starting point.

If you have any respiratory conditions or feel anxious about weight on your chest, start lighter and work up.

When to Go Heavier

Some people find the 10% guideline too light and prefer a blanket that is 12 to 15% of their body weight. This is more common in people who are used to sleeping with heavy bedding or who have significant anxiety or sensory processing needs.

If you try the 10% weight and feel like it is not quite enough pressure, going up to the next size is a reasonable next step.

What About Couples?

Weighted blankets are designed for individual use. If you and your partner want to use one together, you would need a blanket sized to the heavier person, which may feel too heavy for the lighter person. Most couples who love weighted blankets end up with two separate ones rather than sharing.

The Fill Material Question

Weight is only part of the equation. What the blanket is filled with affects how the weight is distributed and how it feels.

Glass beads are the most common fill in quality weighted blankets. They are small, dense, and distribute weight evenly. They also tend to be quieter than plastic pellets.

Plastic poly pellets are less expensive but can be noisier and tend to cluster, creating uneven weight distribution over time.

My Recommendation

For most women over 40, a 15-pound blanket with glass bead fill and a removable cotton cover is a great starting point. It is heavy enough to feel the therapeutic pressure without being so heavy that it becomes uncomfortable.

If you are petite or under 130 pounds, a 12-pound blanket is a better fit.
